South Bank Colleges is celebrating the success of construction student Connie, who has been shortlisted for the prestigious Heating Installer Rising Star of the Year Award.

Currently studying the Level 3 Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship at London South Bank Technical College, Connie is already building a strong reputation in the rapidly growing renewable energy sector. Alongside her course, she is also working towards her Gas Safe certification, demonstrating her commitment to developing industry-ready skills.

Connie’s shortlisting recognises not only her technical ability, but also her drive to go beyond what is expected of an apprentice. Over the past year, she has completed additional training in areas including heat pump systems, health and safety, and first aid. She has also gained hands-on experience working with live ground source heat pump systems at the college – a rare opportunity, as the training centre is currently the only one of its kind in the UK offering this level of practical experience.

Her proactive approach to learning has been key to her progress. Rather than observing from the sidelines, Connie actively seeks out opportunities to get involved, build her confidence, and develop her skills on site. This hands-on mindset has already led to her taking on responsibilities such as independently installing radiators and supporting heat pump servicing work.

Beyond her day-to-day role, Connie is also making an impact across the wider industry. Through her TikTok platform, Heatinghoney, she promotes careers in construction and renewables, particularly encouraging more women to enter the sector. One of her videos has already reached over 70,000 views, helping to inspire and connect with others considering a similar path.

She has also spoken at industry events, including the Apprenticeship Training Conference in Liverpool, where she shared her perspective on modern apprenticeships. Her advocacy extends to supporting others directly – even helping two aspiring plumbers secure jobs by encouraging them to share their CVs online.

Connie’s journey into the industry has not been without challenges. Initially advised against pursuing a career in the trades, she chose to follow her ambition regardless, securing multiple apprenticeship offers through her own determination and initiative.

Her story reflects the changing face of the construction and renewable energy sectors, where talent, passion and perseverance are opening doors to new opportunities.
