Colleagues from across South Bank Colleges recently came together for the inaugural EPYP and 16 to 18 Strategy Day, bringing staff from Lambeth Gateway College and London South Bank Technical College together to strengthen collaboration and enhance the experience of young learners.

The event provided an opportunity for colleagues from a wide range of roles to reflect on current practice, share ideas and explore how best to support students throughout their educational journey. Attendees included teachers, Heads of Curriculum, EHCP Coordinators, Learning Support Practitioners, Development Coaches, Tutors, Careers and Placement Advisors, Quality team members and senior leaders.
Further education colleges support learners from a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences and starting points. Recognising this diversity was central to the day, with discussions focused on ensuring every learner feels supported, valued and able to achieve their potential.
Throughout a series of workshops, colleagues explored key themes including college values, student belonging, attendance, work experience, teaching and learning standards, and opportunities for greater collaboration across teams and campuses. The sessions encouraged open discussion and a shared commitment to continuous improvement, always with the student experience at the heart of decision making.
A particularly meaningful feature of the day was the use of colour coded empty chairs throughout the room. These served as a visual reminder of the learners and responsible adults whose perspectives and experiences remain central to every decision made across the college.
The event also included the introduction of a new Quality Mascot, designed to support engagement with quality improvement initiatives while reinforcing the importance of maintaining high standards across all areas of the student experience.
One of the key messages emerging from the day was the value of building stronger connections between colleagues. While formal discussions and workshops provided valuable insight, many participants reflected on the importance of informal conversations and relationship building in creating a more connected and collaborative college community.
The EPYP and 16 to 18 Strategy Day marked an important step in strengthening cross college working and reaffirmed a shared commitment to supporting young people through outstanding teaching, effective support services and meaningful opportunities that help learners succeed.
South Bank Colleges would like to thank everyone who contributed to the day and embraced the opportunity to collaborate, reflect and help shape the future experience of young learners across the college.
