L3 Art and Design students recently joined forces with L3 Media students for an exciting collaborative project that combined creativity, technical skills and visual storytelling.
Working together, students were challenged to create and light a set based on a randomly assigned location. Their brief was to recreate a campsite scene featuring a recently divorced man sitting alone by a campfire, encouraging them to think carefully about atmosphere, emotion and narrative.
The Art and Design students took the lead in designing and constructing the set, transforming the space into a believable outdoor environment. Meanwhile, the Media students focused on lighting and camera techniques, using their skills to enhance the mood and bring the story to life on screen.

The project gave students valuable experience of working in a professional style creative team, where collaboration between different disciplines is essential. By combining set design, lighting and cinematography, they were able to create a powerful visual scene that captured the emotions of the character and the isolation of the setting.
The final footage demonstrated just how effective creative collaboration can be. Through thoughtful lighting choices and detailed set construction, the scene achieved a striking theatrical quality that impressed both staff and students alike.
Projects like this help students develop industry relevant skills while building confidence in teamwork, problem solving and creative communication. They also provide an opportunity to experience the collaborative processes used across the creative industries, preparing learners for future study and employment.
The stunning results seen on camera are a testament to the talent, dedication and imagination of everyone involved. Alongside the final production, behind the scenes images showcase the hard work that went into turning a simple concept into a compelling visual story.
