London South Bank Technical College, part of the London South Bank University Group, is exploring innovative ways to enhance student wellbeing and engagement. Recently, Baxter, a certified dog mentor, visited campus for a two day trial with students.
Unlike therapy dogs, dog mentors are assessed and certified for suitability in educational settings. Baxter has already been evaluated and approved for such environments, ensuring he can positively interact with young people while maintaining safety and professionalism.
The initial trial allows students and staff to observe Baxter in action and gauge how his presence can support confidence, reduce stress, and create a calm, welcoming environment. If the trial proves successful, a longer evaluation will take place later in May, with the potential for Baxter to join full time in the next academic year.
Bringing a dog mentor into the educational setting reflects a growing focus on holistic support, recognising that wellbeing and learning outcomes are deeply connected. Baxter’s arrival is an exciting opportunity to combine innovative approaches with student-focused care, helping create an environment where everyone can thrive.
