ESOL students at South Bank Colleges have been developing communication skills, exploring employment opportunities and gaining practical knowledge to support their future lives, studies and careers in the UK.

A series of workshops and events has given students opportunities to build their English language confidence while learning more about employment, further study and the support available within their communities.

Adult ESOL students were able to explore a range of possibilities at a dedicated Adult ESOL Careers Fair.

Employers, training providers and support organisations attended the event, giving students the chance to speak directly with representatives and learn more about different industries, employment pathways and education and training opportunities.

For students considering their next steps after completing their ESOL studies, the event provided a valuable opportunity to ask questions, gather information and discover routes that could help them work towards their personal and professional goals.

Practical employment skills were also the focus of a CV and Interview Tips Workshop delivered by Southwark Works. Adult ESOL students received guidance on preparing effective CVs, completing job applications and getting ready for interviews.

The workshop offered advice on presenting skills and previous experience clearly and confidently, as well as answering common interview questions. These are particularly important skills for students preparing to enter or return to the workplace. For younger ESOL students aged 16 to 18, another activity demonstrated how creative approaches can support language development.

A photography session delivered by Learning United used photographs and images as a starting point for conversation. Students discussed and interpreted photographs, practising speaking, listening and descriptive language while sharing their ideas and perspectives with others.

The activity helped students strengthen their ability to communicate in English in an engaging and practical way, while building confidence in expressing their own opinions. Students also took part in a special Refugee Week talk delivered by the Language Academy and Legal Advice Centre.

The session explored some of the challenges refugees and asylum seekers can face when settling in a new country, including language barriers, cultural adjustment and accessing important services. Students received practical information about the support available to help people navigate education, employment and everyday life in the UK.

Across the different activities, a common theme was the importance of communication as a foundation for progression.

Learning English can open doors to employment, further education, training and greater independence. Just as importantly, confidence in communicating can help students participate more fully in their communities and make informed decisions about their futures.

Through careers guidance, practical workshops and creative learning activities, South Bank Colleges continues to support ESOL students as they develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need for their next steps.
