For South Bank Colleges student Devonae Duncan, learning about the travel and tourism industry didn’t just happen in the classroom — it happened in a real hotel, in the heart of Berlin.
Devonae is part of the Global Travel curriculum area at Lambeth College, where students are encouraged to explore careers in tourism, aviation, and international hospitality. Recently, she took part in an exciting overseas work experience placement in Germany, gaining valuable skills and unforgettable memories.
Learning by Doing — In Another Country
The trip to Berlin was part of a structured work placement programme that allows South Bank Colleges students to step outside their comfort zones and into real-life working environments across Europe.
For Devonae, the placement involved living in Berlin with other students and working in a busy tourist hotel. Each student was assigned a role suited to their strengths and interests, with placements ranging from reception and customer service to breakfast service, room cleaning, and hotel operations.
“I worked alongside another student, and we were trained in the day-to-day routines of the hotel,” said Devonae. “We were shown how to manage tasks like breakfast service and room preparation, and we had to interact with customers throughout the day. It really gave me a chance to develop my customer service skills.”
Facing Challenges — and Growing in Confidence
While working abroad can seem daunting, students were supported throughout by their tutors and host employers. Although Devonae admitted she didn’t speak much German, she quickly adapted thanks to the hotel’s international environment.
“It was in a tourist area, so there were guests from all over — England, Italy, other places — and a lot of English was spoken. That made it easier to settle in and focus on the job,” she said.
The trip helped Devonae discover how to remain calm and professional under pressure, a key skill in hospitality. “Sometimes customers were upset or difficult,” she explained. “But I learned to stay polite and focused, no matter what. It really helped me mature.”
A Full-Circle Experience
The work placement wasn’t all hard work. Students also had time to explore Berlin, travel on local transport, visit popular landmarks, and take group photos to remember the experience.
“We had such a good time outside of work — laughing, sightseeing, and spending time together as a group,” said Devonae. “It was a really fun and rewarding experience — one I’ll always remember.”
